Business process optimization and standardization is a major objective of Project BISON. These optimization processes will be guided by and largely follow the implementation methodology of our chosen system integrator and the industry best practice workflows that will come with new software. We intend to apply these thoughtfully and adapt to the unique challenges and opportunities within South Dakota state government. We are not just streamlining existing processes or carrying out continuous improvement activities. We are engaging in the complete replacement of enterprise-wide financial systems and processes, incorporating significant employee involvement and state-of-the-art technology.
While there are similarities, it's important to note that implementing an ERP system and executing continuous improvement each have distinct initiatives with their specific methodologies and challenges. A new ERP system involves a complete reevaluation and redesign of existing business processes focused on implementing the evolved best practices inherent in these systems.
Inherently, an undertaking like Project BISON involves far more than a review or incremental streamlining of narrow business processes. It is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for transformational change in the operation of state government.
