Determining Your SDRS Retirement Benefit

Benefit Formula

SDRS retirement benefits are calculated using a formula that uses a member's final average compensation (FAC), years of credited service, and a benefit multiplier.

Benefit MultiplierxFinal Average Compensation (FAC)xYears of Credited Service

Note: The benefit multiplier used in calculating retirement benefits is dependent on plan design (Foundation or Generational) and Class type (Class A, Class B Public Safety, or Class B Judicial).

The benefit formulas for calculating retirement benefits are as follows:

Foundation Member
Joined SDRS prior to July 1, 2017
Generational Member
Joined SDRS on or after July 1, 2017
Class A

If you are a Class A Foundation member, two formulas are used to determine your benefits: the standard benefit formula and the alternate benefit formula. You will receive the larger based on these formulas. For most members, the standard formula will yield the larger benefit.

The alternative benefit formula is financed by an additional employer contribution of 6.2% of the member's salary that exceeds the maximum taxable amount for Social Security in any calendar year.
Standard Benefit Formula
1.7% x FAC x Credited Service before 7/1/2008
Plus
