Stay ahead of the cyber attackers this holiday season!
Gift card scams
Gift card scams typically commence with a phone call, text message, email, or social media contact. Fraudsters employ a variety of persuasive tactics, similar to phishing tactics, to convince you to purchase gift cards and then coerce you into divulging the card number and PIN codes. Here are some common strategies employed by scammers in gift card scams:
- Urgency – Scammers will often convey a sense of urgency, insisting that you must pay immediately to avert dire consequences. Their goal is to prevent you from contemplating their demands or seeking advice from a trusted source.
- Specific Card Recommendations – Scammers may instruct you on the exact type of gift card to purchase and even direct you to particular retailers. They might also suggest specific stores, sometimes multiple stores. If the scammer remains on the line while you make the purchase, hang up – it’s a scam.
- Request Card Information – Scammers will request the gift card number and the associated PIN. With this information, the scammer can access the funds you loaded into the card, even if you still possess the physical card itself. Do not provide these numbers or share card photos – this is a scam.
In essence, gift card scams rely on manipulation and deceit, often preying on a victim’s emotions and sense of urgency. Be vigilant and cautious to protect yourself from these fraudulent schemes.
