You may visit an exam station in-person to renew your driver license or ID card. But why sit in the waiting room when you can schedule your visit?
Please bring your federally compliant driver's license along with two pieces of mail proving your residential address. Documents must show your name and be less than one year old. If you’ve lost your federally compliant license, read about our required documents.
If you are a CDL holder with a medical certificate, you must bring your medical certificate in order to renew your CDL.
Non-U.S. Citizens must bring proof of legal status.
Permanent travelers with no permanent physical address must bring a receipt of proof of stay within South Dakota from within the past year and one document proving your personal mailbox (PMB) service address and box number.
You'll need to schedule an appointment that requires a knowledge or drive test.
Applicants under the age of 18 will need parental consent and a Driver’s Education Certificate if applicable. Note that the examiner may cancel a road test if the examiner considers the weather or road conditions unsafe.

If your driver license HAS NOT EXPIRED and you did not use the online or mail-in method for your last renewal, you may be eligible to renew online or by mail.
If you prefer to renew your driver license in-person at an exam station, we assure you walk-in customers are wecome. We would encourage you to schedule an appointment so you don't have to sit in the waiting area.
You can also print and complete your application before going to the exam station. No digital, electronic, or stamped signatures allowed on the application.
