
If you’ve lost your license or ID card, you may be eligible to apply for a replacement online, by mail, or you may visit any South Dakota driver exam station to request a duplicate/replacement card. You may also request to change the address on your South Dakota driver license or ID card. Online and mail-in requests can be made once every 10 years. You may schedule an appointment if you're coming to see us in-person.

Am I eligible to request a replacement or duplicate online or by mail?
If your driver license HAS NOT EXPIRED and you did not use the online or mail-in method for your last renewal or replacement request, you may be eligible to submit your request online or by mail. Read the page below for additional information.
Is your license/ID card expired more than 30 days?
If your driver license has been expired for more than 30 days, you are required to visit an exam station in-person and pass a knowledge test.
If you have a motorcycle endorsement (Class 2 license), you will have to take the operator's knowledge test and the motorcycle knowledge test.

If you need to visit an exam station in-person, you may print and complete your application before going to the exam station (see Documents section at bottom of page). No digital, electronic, or stamped signatures allowed on the application.

If you prefer to replace your driver license in-person at an exam station, walk-in customers are welcome. We encourage you to schedule an appointment so you don't have to sit in the waiting area. Read the page below to learn what you'll need to bring with you to the exam station.
Apply for a Duplicate or Change Your Address Online
Here’s what you need to apply online:
- You will be asked to upload or mail two documents to prove your residential/physical address. These items cannot be handwritten documents. They must show your name and be less than one year old.
- Active military personnel and their dependents may use two documents proving their out-of-state residential address or APO/FPO address.
- Parent or guardian mail is acceptable for use by minor under the age of 18.
- If your name has changed, you'll need to apply in person at a driver licensing location and provide a certified legal document proving the name change.
- If your name has changed more than once, you'll need a certified document from a government entity showing each name change.
- We accept Visa or MasterCard for payment of the fee (click here for Fees).
This link will take you to our online renewal site. Click the "Submit Application" button in the upper right corner. If you have an existing MySD account, use your login information. If you are a new user, create an account. Once you create your SD.Gov login, you will use it to conduct all of your online business with other state agencies - for example, getting a fishing or hunting license, making camping reservations, etc. You cannot complete the online driver license replacement process without creating a login identity on the SD.Gov site.
Once finished, your license will be mailed in 3-4 weeks. If you’re mailing proof of address documents, it may take longer. All information in your online transaction will be secure. Apply for a Duplicate or Change your Address by Mail
Here’s what you’ll need to apply by mail:
- A completed license application form (see Documents section at the bottom of this page).
- Applications will not be accepted without an original signature and date included on the bottom of the form. Electronic, digital, or stamped signatures not allowed.
- Applicants under 18 must have a parent or guardian sign.
- Two documents to prove your residential/physical address. These cannot be handwritten documents. Documents must show your name and be less than one year old.
- Active military personnel and their dependents may use two documents proving their out-of-state residential address or APO/FPO address.
- Parent or guardian mail is acceptable for use by minor under the age of 18
- If your name has changed, you’ll need to apply in-person at a Driver Licensing location.
- Include a fee of $20. Make checks payable to “Department of Public Safety.”
- Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope for license return.

Replacement/Duplicate Permits for Minors
For a replacement/duplicate of a minor’s restricted permit, you’ll need to provide:
- The restricted permit holder's driver license/ID card number.
- The restricted permit holder's ate of birth.
- The last four digits of the permit holder's Social Security number.
- Two documents/pieces of mail to prove the permit holder's residential/physical address.
- They cannot be handwritten documents.
- Documents must show permit holder's name and be less than one year old.
- If the applicant is under age 18, a parent or guardian may provide address documents and must complete the parental consent form.
- Parent or guardian mail is acceptable for use by minor under the age of 18.
- Bring these items to the driver exam station for an in-person visit, or send them via email, fax (605-773-3018) or USPS mail to: Driver Licensing Program, 118 West Capitol Avenue, Pierre, SD 57501.
