A new line queue system will hold your place in line and text you with updates as your turn approaches. You can reserve your place in line through a link at home or by scanning a QR code at the Exam Station. You can also schedule an appointment weeks in advance. The new system frees you up to run errands, visit your favorite coffee shop, or wait in the comfort and convenience of your home or car until your place in line nears the front of the queue.

FAQ's

Do I have to use the queue?

Yes, all visitors to a Driver License Exam Station will need to log in to reserve their place in line and to assist us with gathering transaction times. Our queue system allows flexibility. After joining the queue using the weblink or QR code, you can wait from home, in your car, or run errands. You will receive notifications showing your place in line and your estimated wait time via text.

I don’t have a smart phone. How do I join the queue?

No phone? No problem. You can access the system via your home computer at www. SD.gov/dps or ask for assistance at the exam station.

What if I’m late when my turn comes up?

If you are not in our lobby when your name is called you will be placed on ‘hold’. Once you arrive back in our office, reply ‘2’ to the text message or check in with our staff and your place in line will be re-activated.

When can I join the walk-in queue?

The walk-in queue opens a half hour after the exam stations' posted business hours.

Why is the online option not letting me sign in?

Reasons may include:

  1. The number of customers signed in ahead of you exceeds the estimated processing time we are able to complete today.
  2. The system may be down and we are only assisting those who are presently in the lobby. Proceed to the exam station to claim a place in line.
Why does my estimated wait time change after being logged in?

Reasons may include:

  1. There could be a delay in processing with the state computer. We will alert you via text if you are not in our lobby.
  2. Customers returning from an earlier visit today with the full documents needed to complete their transaction may advance back in line where they left off.
  3. Wait times are only an estimate based on the staffing resources and types of transactions ahead of you. During lunch hours staff availability may change.
