This article lists the documentation applicants must provide when applying for or renewing a South Dakota Driver License/Identification card. 

  • Section 1 is for first time applicants and new residents to South Dakota who do not have a REAL ID compliant card from another state.
  • Section 2 is for those with a REAL ID compliant driver license/ID card from another state who wish to transfer to South Dakota. 
  • Section 3 is for those who have a South Dakota REAL ID compliant license and wish to renew or replace it.

 

SECTION 1

New Drivers and New Residents to South Dakota 

In addition to completing an application form, new drivers and new residents will need to provide one identity document, one Social Security document, and two proofs of South Dakota address. Below is a list to guide you to your new license.

1. Prove Your Identity (must provide one of the documents below)

If you are a U.S. Citizen, you must provide one of the following:

  • U.S. Certified birth Certificate (must be issued by a State or County)
  • Valid, unexpired U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport card
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad from the U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization

    ** No photocopies accepted **

If you are a Non-Citizen, you must provide one of the following:

  • Unexpired Permanent Resident Card (i-551)
  • Unexpired Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
  • Record of Arrival and Departure (I-94) and a valid unexpired Foreign Passport

2. Prove Any Name Changes - if applicable (must provide one of the documents below)

  • Court Order - Provide Certified Court Order showing name change(s)*
  • Certified Marriage Certificate*

* If you have had more than one name change, you will need provide one of the documents above to show EACH name changes from birth to present day. We must be able to follow the name progression from your birth certificate to the name you will use on your driver license/identification card.

3. Prove Your Social Security Number (must provide one of the documents below)

  • Social Security Card
  • W-2 - must include name and full Social Security Number
  • Form 1099 - must include name and full Social Security Number
  • Paycheck stub - must include name and full Social Security Number

4. Prove Your South Dakota Address (must provide TWO documents)

The documents or pieces of mail must:

  • Include your name
  • Show your physical address
  • Be dated within the past year
  • CANNOT BE HANDWRITTEN!
  • See below for examples

** No photocopies accepted **

If you are a Full-Time Traveler or use a PMB, you will also need to provide the following items:

  • Receipt of overnight stay in South Dakota in the past year (must include your name)
  • One piece of mail confirming your South Dakota Personal Mailbox Address:
            - Must be no more than one year old.
            - This document could be a receipt from the personal mailbox business or a
               piece of mail with your personal mailbox address on it.
            - It cannot be handwritten.
            - Virtual address or virtual postal addresses will not be accepted
  • Completed Residency Affidavit -- see "Documents Section" below

Examples of address documents include:

  • Your utility bill
  • A bank statement
  • Mortgage or lease agreement
  • Phone bill
  • Your vehicle registration
  • Proof of vehicle insurance
  • Income tax form from employer
  • A medical bill
  • Credit card statement/bill

 

SECTION 2

Out of State Transfers with REAL ID Compliant Licenses

Out of State transfers with a REAL ID compliant license will need to provide one identity document and two proofs of South Dakota address. Below is a list to guide you.

1. Prove Your Identity - must provide your REAL ID compliant driver license or identification card (valid or expired) and one of the following:

If you are a U.S. Citizen, you must provide one of the following:

South Dakota Residents with REAL ID Compliant Licenses

South Dakota REAL ID compliant license/identification card holders will need to provide one identity document and two proofs of South Dakota address. Below is a list to guide you.

NOTE:  If you have lost your REAL ID compliant license/ID card, you will need to provide proof of identity as outlined in Section 2 above.
