PIERRE, S.D. -- In commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, the South Dakota State Library (SDSL) invites South Dakotans to take part in Read 250, a special program dedicated to the study and appreciation of American history.
“Reading books is a great way to immerse oneself in American history and celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday,” said State Librarian George Seamon. “Books have a way of transporting readers to different places and times, of helping us to understand what it was like to live in a different era. And what’s great about libraires is that we can build a community around that experience of learning through reading. This program is a way to create a community of readers who are interested in American and South Dakota history.”
Read 250, or America’s 250th – A Reading Adventure through America’s History, is a self-paced, self-reporting reading program for all ages. Using an app or website, participants can track their reading and take part in activities that will enhance their knowledge of American history. Besides reading, Read 250 activity options include visiting one of eight Carnegie Libraries located in South Dakota, exploring at least two historical sites in South Dakota, and interviewing an elder relative or resident about their experiences growing up. Participants are encouraged to share the details of their experience with others through social media. Readers can include the tag, #SDRead250 or mention the South Dakota State Library in their post.
Those interested in taking part in Read 250 can access the program by visiting its webpage. Readers can join the program individually or as a group. The program will be available until Dec. 31, 2026.
