Survivors of Suicide Loss Day 2025

PIERRE – November 22, 2025, is Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, a day dedicated to honoring those who have lost loved ones to suicide and providing opportunity for connection, understanding, and healing. It serves as a solemn occasion for communities to reflect, unite, and reaffirm their commitment to compassion and support.

In South Dakota, 198 individuals died by suicide in 2024 (DOH Vital Statistics). Suicide is currently the 10th leading cause of death in the state, the second leading cause among youth aged 10-19, and the leading cause among adults aged 20-29 and 30-39. Each loss leaves behind grieving families and friends, many of whom struggle with unanswered questions and the stigma surrounding suicide and mental illness.

Survivors of Suicide Loss Day offers a meaningful opportunity for those affected to come together, share experiences, and honor loved ones. Connecting with others who understand can foster healing, provide emotional support, offer coping tools, and inspire hope, while also strengthening bonds and creating space for comfort and growth.

While nothing can replace a loved one, relating with others who share in the pain and loss can be a step toward healing. Survivors are encouraged to observe the day in a way meaningful to them, whether it is attending a local event, sharing stories or creating personal memorials and remembrance activities. These acts honor those lost while fostering awareness and healing.

Support is available. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is not only for those in crisis, it also provides grief support for individuals coping with suicide loss. Call, text or chat 988 to connect with a trained mental health professional.
