Article Body

The South Dakota National Guard has a long and proud history of supporting our state and nation. The SDNG’s origins date back to 1861 as part of the Dakota Territory. Companies A and B of the 1st Dakota Calvary served during the Civil War after President James Buchanan signed the act establishing the Dakota Territory on March 2, 1861. During the 1850’s, the Army had established garrisons at Fort Pierre and Fort Randall. After the start of the Civil War, the Army withdrew three companies from Fort Randall which necessitated raising volunteer militia to support the exposed fort. Captain Nelson Miner formed Company A, Dakota Calvary on January 27, 1862. This date is celebrated as the official birthday for the South Dakota National Guard.
