New Food Available for SD WIC Participants

With the start of the new year comes new WIC foods! Take a look at some exciting additions to your WIC approved foods list starting in January 2026.

Corn Masa Flour/Masa Harina 

Corn Masa Flour/Masa Harina is now available to purchase with your whole grain benefits. 

  • Maseca

Bulk Oats

Oats in bulk containers are now available to purchase with your whole grain benefits.

Fish

All postpartum women and children over the age of 1 will now receive fish. We have also expanded our fish options. 

New fish options include: 

  • Pouches that are packed in oil or water, 2.5-5 oz, and any brand.
  • Flavors and sauces are now allowed for sardines and tuna

Tofu

Tofu is now available as a substitution option for milk and eggs. You can now trade:

  • 1 quart of milk = 1 lb of tofu (trade up to 4 quarts (1 gallon) of milk)
  • 1 dozen eggs = 1 lb of tofu

Any firmness is allowed in 1lb packages

Fresh Herbs

Fresh Herbs are now allowed to be purchased with your fruit and vegetable dollars. All fresh herbs cut at the stem or with the root are allowed. Dried or potted herbs/spices are NOT allowed. 

 

Trade Juice & Infant Fruits and Vegetables for Fruit and Vegetable Dollars

Talk to your case manager about making these changes. 

  • 1, 64 fl oz container of juice = $3 for fruits and vegetables
  • Half of Infant Fruits and Vegetables (64 oz) = $11 for regular fruits and vegetables
  • All of Infant Fruits and Vegetables (128 oz) = $22 for regular fruits and vegetables

 

Trade Eggs for Other Protein Options

Talk to your case manager about making these changes. 

  • 1 container of peanut butter = 1 dozen eggs
  • 64 oz canned beans = 1 dozen eggs
  • 1 lb dry beans = 1 dozen eggs
  • 1 lb tofu = 1 dozen eggs

Recipe Spotlight

Pupusas

Pupusas

Homemade Pupusas are easy to make and can be stuffed with various WIC approved foods. Kids will love to help make the dough and stuff the pupusas! Give it a try! 

 

Ingredients 

  • Pupusas:
    • 4 cups Masa Harina  
    • 3 1/2 - 4 cups warm water
    • 2 teaspoons salt 
    • 2 tablespoons softened butter or oil (optional) 
  • Filling: Get Creative! Choose 1 or 2 of the following options 
    • Shredded mozzarella cheese
    • Mashed Black or pinto beans
    • Canned Tuna 
    • Cooked vegetables of your choice. Try cauliflower, spinach, zucchini, broccoli, or peppers 

Directions

  1. Make Dough: Add masa harina and salt to a large mixing bowl then add the warm water, little by little, while mixing the dough with your hand until you get the consistency of a soft play dough. Add more water as needed if the dough becomes too dry. Stir in butter or oil (optional). 
  2. Scoop dough into golf-ball-size portions, dipping your hands in an oil and water mixture as needed if the masa is sticking to your hands. Keep dough balls covered with a damp cloth as you work, to keep from drying out.
  3. Form Pupusas: Pat the dough into a pancake in your hand, about 4 inches in diameter. Add a Tablespoon of your toppings in the center and a sprinkle of shredded cheese. Fold the edges up and pinch to close into a ball. Gently pat the dough back and forth between your palms to form it back into a thin pancake.
  4. Cook: Heat a large un-greased skillet or pan over medium heat. Place pupusas on the hot pan and cook for about 2-4 minutes on each side. You will know the pupusas are ready to flip when the edges are set and the bottom is lightly golden.
  5. Serve immediately
