What Do I Do With My.... Vegetables and Fruits?

Have you ever thought about how to make the most of the beans, cereal, fruits, and veggies you get with WIC? Sometimes we end up eating the same fruits like bananas and apples, but there are many more options available! Let's explore how to make the most of your cash value benefit from WIC!

Vegetables and Fruits

Most likely you’re able to use all of the vegetable and fruit money, but there are ways to get even more out of those dollars!

  1. Choose in season produce: It is usually cheaper during this time! Check out the seasonal produce here.
  2. Check out the frozen or canned food aisles: Sometimes fresh isn’t always better when it could end up rotting and going to waste. Canned fruits and veggies are a great pantry staple and can give you a good bang for your buck!
  3. Go with the whole: It can be tempting to purchase the pre-cut produce, but these are often much more expensive! Save your dollars and watch a quick video on how to cut up an item you might not be familiar with.

Have some produce that is about to go bad? Try out some of these great meal and snack ideas:

  1. Puree vegetables like cooked carrots, squash, or cauliflower into pasta sauces.
  2. Make a unique salad by adding berries or diced squash.
  3. Add sautéed peppers and onions to your taco or burrito filling.
  4. Don’t forget to add some veggies to your sandwich! Try sliced cucumbers, tomato, or spinach.
  5. Blend it! Make a smoothie with leftover fruits and toss in spinach or cooked cauliflower.
  6. Top pizza with veggies like peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, and onion.
